Exotic Clusters

With the rise in interest in creating Linux clusters on "alternative" hardware platforms, such as game consoles, for example, we decided to put the links we've collected together on one page.

Projects

  • Furbeowulf Cluster Computing: The name says it all.

  • Playstation 2 Cluster: NCSA has built a cluster out of PS2s. It has a total of 70 nodes in it, with the hopes that it can achieve about 1/2 Teraflop of computing power.

  • XBox Cluster: This person built a cluster out of 3 XBoxes, running Mandrake 9, MPICH, and distcc. He has some instructions on how he did it, and some pictures of his cluster and the procedure at various stages.

  • XBox Linux Beowulf Project: This is the homepage of a project whose goal is to build a 14 node cluster out of XBoxes running Linux, for a total of 10.2 GHz of computing power.

Miscellaneous Links

  • GameCube Linux: Linux has been ported to the Nintendo GameCube hardware platform. Odds are good at some point, someone will try to build a cluster of these, since it's been done with the other major gaming platforms.

  • Linux for Playstation 2 Community: This website is dedicated to giving users and developers of Linux for PlayStation 2 a place to interact and host software and documentation projects.

  • Xbox Linux Project: The Xbox Linux Project offers versions of GNU/Linux for the Xbox, making use of all Xbox hardware and is based on common Linux distros with small modifications.
